Roof cleaning before painting

A coating adheres to the surface that remains after cleaning—not to moss, chalk, dirt or loose old paint.

What cleaning needs to achieve

The surface should be free of contaminants and unsound material that would interfere with adhesion. The cleaning method, pressure and nozzle must be appropriate for the roof type and condition.

Cleaning is not restoration by itself

Pressure washing can reveal cracked tiles, failed coatings, rust or ridge defects, but it does not repair them. These findings should be assessed before painting proceeds.

Protect the property

  • Plan runoff and gutter discharge
  • Consider neighbouring properties and vehicles
  • Protect suitable fixtures and surfaces
  • Check solar panels and penetrations
  • Control debris and overspray
  • Allow the substrate to dry as required

Manufacturer guidance

Dulux roof-system information emphasises thorough cleaning, removal of contaminants and drying before coating. Exact requirements depend on the selected product and substrate.
